CITY ENGINEER

City Island Underpass

This project is to widen and replace the Market Street Bridge Underpass on the City Island. Work began in late July of 2005 on this project to replace the structure on the City Island that carries Market Street over the underpass that connects the parking lots to the north and south of the Market Street Bridge. The existing bridge over the underpass was built in 1934. The new bridge structure will be longer-75 ft instead of 24 ft. The additional length will allow for a wider underpass.

Currently, the width of the underpass is 24 ft for two 12ft travel lanes. The vertical clearance is currently 12 ft 6 in. When the project is completed, the new width of the underpass will be 46 feet- including 36 ft for three lanes for traffic (two lanes of traffic and a left turn lane) and two 5 ft wide sidewalks. The new vertical clearance will be 14 ft 8 in. the overall project also includes reconstruction of the south ramp and widening of the north ramp connecting the Market Street Bridge and City Island.

PennDOT has contracted with Susquehanna Valley Construction Corp. of New Cumberland, Pennsylvania to conduct the construction project at a cost of $3,225,000. The project will help transform the entranceways for City Island and should ease traffic congestion, improve safety and convenience to motorists and pedestrians, and be more appealing to visitors. This project was completed May 26, 2006 with the exception of a few minor items.
