Design Proposals Under Review and Advisory Board Established
Planning for The National African American Cultural Center is now in the design proposal stage. Mayor Reed’s proposed The National African American Cultural Center is moving forward with the recent issuance of a Request for Proposals for Design of the facility. A citizen’s advisory board has reviewed a number of potential locations for the national-class facility but no final decision has yet been made. Several responses to the Design RFP have been received and are currently being reviewed. Selection of the successful proposer and the designation of an architect for the facility are both likely during the fourth quarter of this year.
The National African American Cultural Center will highlight the rich and illustrious heritage and contributions of African Americans to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and the United States. The Museum will cover the entire African American experience, from its origins in Mother Africa to the forced exodus of slavery, the American Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, and the many contributions of African Americans to the growth of our Nation and its economic might over the past two centuries.
