City Special Events Sponsorships Now Being Sought: Significant Marketing And Promotional Opportunities Offered
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the City of Harrisburg’s 2005 Corporate Event Sponsorship Book is now available for review by local businesses interested in partnering with the city on its many annual special events and other recreational programming. The book lists the many different events annually produced by the city and the various sponsorship levels and opportunities being offered.
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Competition Winners Announced
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced the winners of the City’s Twenty-first Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Essay Competition. The successful young authors were recognized at a special ceremony in their honor at the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. City Government Center, the only government headquarters in the world to be named after the heroic civil rights leader. It was so named by an Executive Order issued by the Mayor in 1982.
Minority Business Development Further Bolstered With New Mentoring Protege Program
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that minority contracting and minority-owned business development efforts are now being bolstered by the establishment of a new Mentoring Protégé Program.
Mayor Urges Residents & Businesses To Obtain Flood Insurance
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today urged city residents to obtain flood insurance for their properties if they do not currently have such coverage. Harrisburg’s extensive flood preparation and emergency management activities have resulted in a 15% reduction in base flood insurance premiums for city businesses and residents from what would otherwise be normally charged.
Mayor Urges Citizens To Respond To Upcoming Federal Census Survey
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the U.S. Bureau of Census will be conducting the new American Community Survey in coming months, and urged citizens who receive the confidential form to promptly answer and return it. Local residents are also being sought for part time employment to conduct follow-up on the surveys.
Suspect Arrested In Christmas Weekend robberies & Sexual Assault
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that Harrisburg Police have arrested 19-year old Reginald Paul Thomas Jr. in connection with two robberies and a sexual assault that occurred on Sunday, December 26 in the midtown area. Thomas was released from Dauphin County Prison in October, 2004 after serving 2 ½ months for a drug possession conviction, and was again arrested on December 30, 2004, by Lower Paxton Township Police on unrelated robbery charges. He was being held in the Dauphin County Prison on those charges when city police officers arrested him today in connection with his Harrisburg crimes.
4-ALARM BLAZE ON RADNOR STREET CAUSED BY ELECTRIC PANEL SHORT AT 627 RADNOR STREET
Mayor Stephen R. Reed this morning reported that a major four- alarm blaze that damaged seven homes in the 600 block of Radnor Street last night was caused by an electrical short in a basement panel box at 627 Radnor Street, and not as a result of an earlier fire at 623 Radnor Street. The fire, one of the largest to strike the city in years, brought nearly 20 fire companies and 100 firefighters to the Uptown Harrisburg location.
Dunkin Donuts Opens On Restaurant Row
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today cut the ribbon during grand opening ceremonies for the new Dunkin Donuts Restaurant, located at 107 N. Second Street in the heart of downtown’s Restaurant Row. It is the first major national chain eatery to open along the busy dining and entertainment district.

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today cut the ribbon on another new restaurant in downtown Harrisburg as Sophia’s Seafood Restaurant officially opened at 405 Walnut Street. The elegant new dining attraction features an Italian seafood menu and Mediterranean décor.
Emergency Search & Rescue Team Dispatched To Williamsport Area
Mayor Stephen R. Reed this afternoon announced that a special emergency search and rescue team, comprised of ten personnel and four tracking dogs, is being dispatched to the Williamsport area of Lycoming County to accelerate and enhance the search for a 9-year old boy who has been missing from his home since Saturday evening.
Holden Announces over $2.4 Million in Federal Earmarks for Dauphin County
At a press conference and check presentation held today, Congressman Tim Holden announced $2,468,250 million in earmarked federal funds. Congressman Holden presented checks to Mayor Stephen R. Reed, City of Harrisburg for four projects in Dauphin County.

Replacement Land Identified Dehart Dam Acreage Not Needed For Military Training Area Expansion At Ft.Indiantown Gap
– Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that replacement land has been identified to allow the Pennsylvania National Guard to expand its military training buffer zone at Fort Indiantown Gap and that land initially sought by the military at the DeHart Dam will no longer be needed.

City Tv Show Takes Top Honors In International Competition
Harrisburg’s WHBG Cable Channel 20 has taken top honors in international competition, Mayor Stephen R. Reed said today in announcing the city’s receipt of the prestigious Award of Distinction from the international Communicator Awards-2004 Video Competition. The award was presented for a telemarketing fraud episode of the city-produced “The Smart Consumer” public affairs show, which is hosted by Harrisburg attorney Rick Hicks.
