MAYOR’S BLACK HISTORY GALA SET FOR 7 P.M.THIS SATURDAY, FEB. 12, AT HILTON HOTEL; BET COMEDIAN KENNY ROBB & THE PANAMA BAND FEATUREDMayor Stephen R. Reed today said there are still a few seats left for the Sixth Annual Mayor’s Black History Gala, set for this Saturday, Feb.12, at the Harrisburg Hilton and Towers. The event begins at 7:00 p.m. and tickets cost $50.00 per person, or $500 for a table of ten. There are a limited number of tickets still available for the normally sold-out event. First begun by the Mayor in 2000 to highlight the contributions of local African Americans and to raise funds for the Black History Youth Performing Artist Showcase later in March, the Black History Gala has quickly become one of Harrisburg’s most eagerly anticipated charitable events. The semi-formal, black tie optional Gala features an array of awards presentations and special recognitions to midstate African American civic leaders, a silent art auction, and live entertainment from popular BET Comedian and Harrisburg native Kenny Robb, and The Panama Band, Baltimore’s hottest show and dance band. Reed said the Black History Gala is a perfect opportunity to celebrate the many contributions local African Americans have made to the betterment of Harrisburg and the Capital Region, and simultaneously raise funds to support the city’s next generation of artists and civic leaders. The Mayor said all of the proceeds from the event are earmarked for the Seventh Annual Black History Youth Performing Artists Showcase, which is set for Wednesday, March 16, at the Forum Building in downtown. Themed a “Celebration of Unity”, the Showcase is free and open to the ticketed public and features students in grades 5 through 12 from both Harrisburg and the surrounding region performing a wide array of artistic disciplines. The popular Showcase is performed twice during the day, with a special morning performance reserved solely for city school students and senior citizens. The encore evening performance begins at 7:30 p.m. and attendees must have a free, advance-issued ticket to gain admission. Tickets are available on Wednesday, March 9 beginning at Noon at Mr. Mike’s Records, Music Man, Giant Foods-Kline Village, Rec. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. City Government Center – Suite 401 and at the Reservoir Park Mansion. There is a four-ticket per person limit.
