THE OFFICE OF MAYOR STEPHEN R. REED |
FOR IMMEDIATE USE |
11-YEAR OLD DONATES HAIR TO “LOCKS OF LOVE” PROGRAMMayor Stephen R. Reed today said Valentine’s Day has special meaning this year for 11-year old Victoria Heaney, who is donating her 14-inch long hair to the national “Locks of Love” program to benefit children stricken by cancer. Victoria’s hair will be cut at the Fantastic Sam’s Salon at 3870 Union Deposit Road at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, February 14, and then used to help make wigs for children who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy and other medical treatments and illnesses. The Mayor said Victoria is a 5th Grader at Paxtang Elementary School and the daughter of Richard and Barbara Heaney of Harrisburg. Her father is the Director of the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development. Heaney said his daughter first became interested in the program after reading about it Parents Magazine four years ago. After learning more about it from her mother Barbara, who works with chronically ill children at the Hershey Medical Center, she made the decision to let her hair grow much longer than usual and donate it through the Locks of Love program. She began growing her hair in December, 2000. “I thought this was a good way to help other kids,” said Victoria, “and all you have to do is let your hair grow. It is so easy and it means so much to kids who are already suffering. I’d love to see all my fellow students do the same thing.” “Victoria has always been a very giving, compassionate person,” said her parents, “so her involvement in this program doesn’t surprise us very much. We are very proud of her.” For more information on the haircutting please contact Richard Heaney at (717) 576.1881, or contact the national Locks of Love program at 888.896.1858 or visit their website at info@locksoflove.org. |
