FUNDRAISING FOR WORLD-CUP FLAG FOOTBALL TEAM UNDERWAY

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that fundraising efforts are underway to cover the costs for a local team to attend the Flag Football World Cup Championship Games in Miami Beach, Florida.

The Just 4 Kidz Outreach program, headquartered in a city-owned facility next to the major swimming pool complex in south Harrisburg, fielded a flag football league this past year. Some of the players developed so well that they were entered into the U.S. regional flag football competition in New England, where they won. It entitles them to attend the World Cup event.

Reed said the youngsters are mostly from the public housing at Hall Manor and Hoverter Homes and are unable to cover their own travel and lodging expenses. The city has chipped in $5,000. An additional $20,000 is needed to entirely cover all expenses. Contributions are tax-deductible and can be made payable to the Just 4 Kidz Outreach Program, 1408 S. 18th Street, Harrisburg, PA 17104, telephone (717) 920.1575.

The mayor said that “the local league, while focused on football, is teaching teamwork, discipline, goal-setting and other important values and habits, which is the real success story here. The World Cup Competition is more than about a sport. It is about youngsters knowing that they can do well and that their community values, encourages and supports them in doing so.

” Persons with questions about the fundraising drive may contact the Rev. Earl Harris of St. Paul’s Baptist Church at (717) 234.0037.
