GENERAL ALARM FIRE SUNDAY NIGHT DISPLACES NINE; TWO ACCIDENTS INVOLVING RESPONDERS

Mayor Stephen R. Reed tonight reported that a general alarm fire the second in Harrisburg in a 24-hour period did over $25,000 damage to 1512-1514 S. 12th Street.

The blaze, initially called in at 4:46 p.m., caused no injuries. Its cause has yet to be determined by fire investigators. It started in the attic of 1514 S. 12th Street. Arriving firefighters found flames shooting from the roof of both properties, which are connected by a common loft area.

Nine persons five adults and four children have been displaced as a result of the fire. Both homes can be restored. The Susquehanna Valley Red Cross Chapter is providing temporary lodging.

In two related incidents to this fire, the city Fire Bureau’s Tower 1, while enroute to this blaze, was struck by a private vehicle at 13th and Derry Streets. Later, the initially dispatched Red Cross Disaster Services volunteer, traveling to the fire scene, was involved in a motor vehicle accident and had to be replaced by another volunteer. Snow and cold temperatures have hampered firefighting work in the wake of the Saturday winter storm in the area.

Reed said the first general alarm fire was at 6:04 p.m. Saturday evening and started at 1604 Zarker Street, spreading to two adjoining structures at 1602 and 1606 Zarker Street. It was caused by the careless use of smoking materials, which got into the underside of a sofa in the first floor front room at 1604 Zarker Street. Occupants tried to extinguish the fire themselves before calling 911. One adult and three children were displaced. There were no injuries and damage was estimated at over $30,000 for all three properties.
