POSTAL WORKERS TO COLLECT DONATED FOODSTUFFS DOOR-TO-DOOR ON SATURDAY, MAY 10, 2008
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today joined members of the Harrisburg Branch 500 of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the U.S. Postal Service in kicking off the 2008 National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive, which encourages the donation of non-perishable foodstuffs to the South Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and other regional food banks. The Harrisburg Area Drive is being conducted on Saturday, May 10, 2008, in association with the U.S. Postal Service, the United Way of the Capital Region, the AFL-CIO and America’s Second Harvest.

In a ceremony held today, the American Institute of Architects of Pennsylvania (AIA Pennsylvania) presented Mayor Stephen Reed with its top state award for Contribution to the Profession by a Government Official. The award is given by the AIA Pennsylvania Board of Directors in recognition of significant contributions to, or in particular support of, the role of the architectural profession and/or the built environment. Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said that a team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), will arrive on April 26, 2008 to determine how well the Harrisburg Bureau of Police continues to meet national law enforcement standards. Part of the process involves a public hearing, where members of the community are invited to offer comments on the Bureau’s ability to comply with the CALEA Standards.

CITY EARNS DESIGNATION AS ‘KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL’ AFFILIATE
Mayor Stephen R. Reed was today presented with an official certification designating the City of Harrisburg as an affiliate of the national Keep America Beautiful (KAB) organization. In earning the designation, deemed locally as the ‘Keep Harrisburg Beautiful’ campaign, the City of Harrisburg joins 1,000 other affiliates nationwide to receive such certification this year.

GROUND BROKEN ON ‘ZERO ENERGY’ HOME IN SOUTH ALLISON HILL
Mayor Stephen R. Reed, Tri-County HDC, Ltd. and a host of local officials today broke ground on an innovative ‘zero energy’ home to be built at 340 S. 16th Street in the City’s South Allison Hill neighborhood. The ‘zero energy’ home is a model home that will be built in the Mount Pleasant Homes development as part of a 25-home, $5 million housing development project in the neighborhood. The remaining traditional homes, each of which will have more conventional energy efficiency features, will be built in the 1400 and 1500 blocks of Swatara Street and the 300 block of South 16th Street.

MAJOR GAINS REGISTERED IN CITY OVER THE PAST YEAR
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported that in 2007 the City issued 1,840 building permits representing $266,433,000.00 in new economic development, which is a 68% increase in the level of investment over the preceding year. It puts 2007 into one of the top five years in the volume of new economic development. Since 1982, there have now been a total of 37,971 permits issued for $4,405,000,000.00, continuing to reverse three decades of previous decline that caused Harrisburg to be listed as the second most distressed city in the nation.

REV. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. ESSAY COMPETITION WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced the winners of the City’s 24th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Competition. The successful young authors were recognized at a special ceremony in their honor at the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. City Government Center, the only governmental headquarters in the world to be named after the heroic civil rights leader. It was so named by an Executive Order issued by the Mayor in the early 1980s.

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that an arrest has been made in connection with Wednesday night’s homicide in the 1800 block of Brookwood Street. Bobbie Brown, 29, of the 600 block of S. Arlington Avenue in Lower Paxton Township, turned himself in to Harrisburg Police at around 5:15p.m. without incident.
