June 28, 2002 — Minnesota Vikings Star Robert Tate Elected Chairman Of Nat. Alliance Of African American Athletes
Harrisburg native and Minnesota Vikings star cornerback Robert Tate has been selected chairman of the Athletes Advisory Committee for the National Alliance of African American Athletes (Alliance), Mayor Stephen R. Reed announced today during formal installation ceremonies held in the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. City Government Center.

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the prestigious W.K. Kellogg Foundation has awarded the Harrisburg School District a $5.25 million grant for the implementation of a comprehensive early childhood education program. One of the major components of the Mayor’s reform efforts for the District is the early childhood initiative, which will be known as the REACH Program, which stands for Reaching Early Achievement for Children in Harrisburg.

A new residential housing construction effort was launched today as Mayor Stephen R. Reed, state Department of Community and Economic Development’s Executive Director, Office of Community Services and Center for Community Building, Donald Hershey, and officials from the Wesley Union Union Community Development Corporation broke ground for a new low to moderate income housing development in uptown Harrisburg.

A new city hotspot for coffee, dining and neighborhood repartee was unveiled today as Mayor Stephen R. Reed conducted ribbon cutting services for the new Café Sol at 231 North Street. Site of the former North Street Café, the popular venue has been completely restored by co-owners Rick Galiardo and Shane Souders and is now open for coffee, dining and conviviality.

A $55,000 grant from the Benjamin and Gloria Olewine Charitable Lead Trust Fund has transformed the former Penn and Dauphin Playground in Harrisburg into a distinctive new community recreation facility, Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced during rededication ceremonies for the popular neighborhood park, which the Mayor has renamed the Olewine Playground in honor of the noted city philanthropist.
