January 27, 2003 — City School District To Receive $117,000 Grant From Dauphin County For Mental Health Awareness & Treatment & Violence Prevention
Harrisburg city school students will benefit from a $117,000 grant provided by the Dauphin County Commissioners, Mayor Stephen R. Reed and Commissioners Lowman Henry and Jeff Haste today announced. The grant monies will be used for the Harrisburg Outreach for PATHS Expansion (HOPE) program, which strives to create better social and emotional health for city school students.

January 24, 2003 — Another Neighborhood-Based Business Opened After $140,000 Building Renovations
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today cut the ribbon to officially open another neighborhood-based business in the City. The event and brief dedication program opened the new H&R Block Company offices in Allison Hill at 202 S. 13th Street, where a bi-lingual staff can provide tax and financial service assistance to citizens in both Spanish and English.

January 23, 2003 — Former Hamilton St. Apartment Building To Become New Single Family Homes
A long-vacant 12-unit apartment building in the city’s Uptown will become three new single-family, owner-occupied homes in a unique rehabilitation effort being launched by the city-based Renovations Company Inc., Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced. The innovative restoration project will involve the complete rehabilitation of the long blighted property at 226 Hamilton Street and each new home will be sold to new owner-occupants.

January 19, 2003 — City Non- Emergency Phone Lines To Be Temporarily Shut Down On Mon., Jan. 20; Callers Can Use 911 Instead
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported that upgrades to the city’s Police Communications Center telephone lines will cause the temporary shutdown of the city’s non-emergency phone lines on the Martin Luther King Holiday, Monday, January 20, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Callers with an emergency, however, will still be able to get help by simply calling 911.

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced the winners of the City’s Nineteenth Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Competition. The successful young authors were recognized at a special ceremony in their honor at the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. City Government Center, the only government headquarters in the world to be named after the heroic civil rights leader. It was so named by an Executive Order issued by Mayor Reed.

January 13, 2003 — Mayor Urges Residents & Businesses To Obtain Flood Insurance
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today urged city residents to obtain flood insurance for their properties if they do not currently have such coverage. Harrisburg’s extensive flood preparation and emergency management activities have resulted in a 15% reduction in base flood insurance premiums for city businesses and residents from what would otherwise be normally charged.
