Harrisburg Named Tree City USA For Sixteenth Consecutive Year; New Tree Plantings Mark City Arbor Day Observances

Mayor Stephen R. Reed and Assistant State Forester Michael Lester of the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources today helped mark the city’s designation for the 16th consecutive year as a Tree City USA by planting sixteen new trees in Reservoir Park. The planting effort was part of the city’s National Arbor Day commemoration.

Mayor Kicks Off 2003 Neighborhood Beautification Program With 290 Blocks And Lots Adopted By Volunteers

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today kicked off the city’s Spring neighborhood clean-up drive with dozens of volunteer workers sprucing up the 13th and Market Street area. The city organized beautification effort continues on Saturday, April 26, with neighborhood groups undertaking clean-up work on more than 290 city blocks and lots.

Mayor Announces Inaugural Season For Levitt Performing Arts Series In Restored Reservoir Park Bandshell

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced the artists’ roster and dates for the inaugural Levitt Pavilion Performing Arts Series, slated for June 4 through August 23 at the restored Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts in Reservoir Park. The family-oriented, summer-long series of 45 different event dates runs primarily every Wednesday through Saturday evening, and features more than 60 different live performances ranging from children’s entertainment to theater, dance and many different genres of music.

$1,448,582 Saved By City Natural Gas Bulk Buying Program

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported that the Natural Gas Bulk Buying Program established and managed by the City of Harrisburg has saved a total of $1,448,582 for the eight governmental entities and non-profit facilities that are enrolled in the program. That is a 22.5% savings over what the same entities would have paid for the same natural gas supply at normal prices. The program works by negotiating bulk gas supply in advance at present rates.

Reed today announced that the popular Capitol Steps Comedy Troupe will perform in Harrisburg at The Forum Theater on Thursday, July 3, at 7:30 p.m. The performance, included as part of the city’s Independence Weekend American Musicfest along the waterfront, serves as a fundraiser for both the Musicfest and the newly created Levitt Concert Series in Reservoir Park.

Mayor Urges City Residents To Take Advantage Of Federal Earned Income Tax Credit And State Tax Forgiveness Program; Thousands In Tax Refund Money Available To City Residents

Many Harrisburg residents are eligible for individual federal and state tax refunds totaling into the thousands of dollars, said Mayor Stephen R. Reed today, as he urged city residents to apply for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program. The income-based refund program significantly reduces the annual federal payroll tax deduction for the working poor, allowing for increased weekly take-home pay, and in many cases, a substantial refund from the federal government. The payments are even available to working persons who have paid little or no federal income taxes.

Plans For Additional School Renovations, New Space Announced

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced plans for the renovation of the remaining schools in the Harrisburg School District that have not yet been recently upgraded, including the construction of new space to accommodate the new preschool program, four community health centers, expanded academic programs and increasing student enrollments. The Facility Plan is the result of 14 months of intensive study, review and planning.

Commerce Bank, United Concordia Each Give $50,000 To City School District’s Early Childhood Program

Mayor Stephen R. Reed’s comprehensive Early Childhood Education (REACH) initiative for the Harrisburg School District today received substantial corporate contributions from Commerce Bank and United Concordia dental insurance company. The generous $50,000 grants complete two-year pledges to the program of $100,000 each, and brings the total amount of charitable giving to the program to more than $6.5 million.
