New ‘City Islanders’ Professional Outdoor Soccer Coming To Harrisburg City Island
Mayor Stephen R. Reed and new franchise principal Eric D. Pettis today announced that a new outdoor professional soccer team will begin play on Harrisburg City Island starting in April of 2004. The new team, to be known as the Harrisburg City Islanders, will play in the Pro Soccer League(PSL) division of the United Soccer Leagues at Skyline Sports Complex.

Free Fire Awareness Day Activities Slated For PA National Fire Museum
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the Pennsylvania National Fire Museum will be hosting a daylong series of free events and activities in conjunction with National Fire Awareness Day, slated for this coming Saturday, September 27, 2003, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the Museum at 1824 N. Fourth Streets. The unique family-style event features firefighting displays, equipment demonstrations and youth-oriented activities.

Aggravated Assault Charges Filed For Concrete Throwing Incident On Mulberry Street Bridge
An Allison Hill man who threw chunks of concrete onto vehicles from atop the Mulberry Street Bridge has been charged with multiple counts of Aggravated Assault and other charges, Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced. Arrested in connection with the September 13 incident is 30-year old Chris Gruber, who nearly killed a passing Capitol Police Officer and another motorist when he threw large chunks of concrete onto their vehicles as they were traveling south on Cameron Street.

Three Arrested, Two Sought In Uptown Jewelry Store Robbery
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that three suspects have been arrested and two more are being sought in connection with the August 20th armed robbery of the Canal Jewelers store in the Uptown Plaza. Jason E. Crawley, age 20, of the 3100 block of Brookwood Street has been charged with actually committing the robbery, and police are looking for another as yet unidentified suspect who accompanied him inside the store. Others have been charged or are being sought in connection with their roles in the incident.

Uptown Braxton Playground Undergoes Complete Restoration
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today conducted dedication services for the newly rehabilitated Braxton Playground, located in the 2100 block of N. Seventh in the city’s Uptown. The comprehensive renovation effort cost more than $112,000.00, with funding provided by an array of federal, state and city sources, as well as local non-profit organizations.

Two Injured In Two Back-To-Back Fires; Family Displaced; Two Residents To Be Cited As Heroes
Mayor Stephen R. Reed tonight reported on two fires, which occurred within minutes of one another, the first being reported at 6:00 p.m.
The first alarm was reported as fire and smoke, with possible entrapment of persons inside at 2464 Reel Street, a detached single family home. On arrival, firefighters did a primary search and quickly extinguished the blaze, which did at least $15,000 damage to the structure and contents.

Water Rescue Task Force Activated For Duty In Maryland; Water Treatment Plant Loses Electrical Power; Storm-Related Operations Continue
Mayor Stephen R. Reed reported this morning that teams from the Pennsylvania Water Rescue Strike Force are being dispatched to Baltimore County, Maryland to assist that county in the wake of extensive flooding from Tropical Storm Isabel. Their help was requested by the State of Maryland and the teams will be in the Baltimore area by or before dawn and remain for as long as needed. Over 500,000 people are without electrical power in that area.

City’S Free Fifth Annual Fishing Derby Slated For Sept. 27–29 At Jackson-Lick Pool
Mayor Stephen R. Reed has announced that all city trash collection services will be suspended on Fri., Sept. 19, and will resume on Sat., Sept. 20. Also, the city’s popular free Fishing Derby, set for this weekend at Pool #1, has been postponed to next week.

Storm Preparations Underway In City; City Services And Events Undergo Postponements
Mayor Stephen R. Reed tonight reported on a variety of storm preparation efforts underway in Harrisburg in anticipation of Hurricane Isabel’s winds and rains. City trash collection services for both commercial and residential customers will be suspended for one day, on Friday, and the city’s popular Fishing Derby is being pushed back to the following weekend of Sept. 27, 28 and 29.
The Mayor said the storm, which is currently a strong category 2 hurricane, is expected to make landfall in North Carolina on Thursday afternoon, with winds and rainfall expected in the midstate from Thursday night through Friday morning. Two to four inches of rainfall and sustained winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour is expected, with gusting to 45 mph possible. “We want to make it clear that these are not crisis conditions, but a few precautions are appropriate,” Reed said.

City’S Free Fifth Annual Fishing Derby Slated For Sept. 27–29 At Jackson-Lick Pool
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the City’s Fifth Annual “Get Hooked on Fishing” Derby will be held at the Jackson Lick Pool at 1201 N. Sixth Street during the period of September 27, 28 and 29. The free fishing derby is open to youth only on Saturday, Sept. 27, with families, seniors and special needs groups permitted on Sunday and Monday, Sept. 28 and 29.

City Receives Top National Budget Award
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported that the City of Harrisburg has again received the top national award for budgeting and financial reporting. It is the thirteenth consecutive year that the City has received the distinctive national recognition, which is conferred by the respected Government Finance Officers’ Association (GFOA). An independent panel of Certified Public Accountants and fiscal experts reviewed the city’s budget documents before making the determination.

City Website Address Changes To www.harrisburgpa.gov
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that Harrisburg’s popular Internet Website has a new domain name, www.harrisburgpa.gov, which in the coming months will replace the city’s current domain, www.harrisburgcity.com. Both domain addresses will remain in use and as an added convenience to users old bookmarks, favorites or other shortcuts will continue to work. An automatic feature will shortly begin replacing the old domain with the new domain.

New Schweiker Special Operations Center Dedicated In Harrisburg; Facility To House Federal & State Specialized Emergency Teams
Pennsylvania’s emergency response capabilities are significantly enhanced today with the grand opening of the new Mark S. Schweiker Special Operations Center by Governor Ed Rendell and Harrisburg Mayor Stephen R. Reed. $37.7 Million Housing Project Work Begins At Former Maclay Street Apartments
Harrisburg, PA—Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that construction will soon be underway on one of the largest residential housing projects ever conducted in Harrisburg, with the $37.7 million rehabilitation of the Maclay Street Apartments set to begin within the next month. The major Uptown housing renewal effort involves the construction of 71 new owner-occupied homes and the restoration of an additional 222 rental units, creating a total 293 new or restored housing units.

German Heroine Attacked By Pit Bulls Receives Funds Donated For Medical Care; Karoline Stallcup To Return To Germany Wednesday
A German citizen who was attacked by three pit bulls in a July 15 incident in Uptown Harrisburg today received a check for $3,500 for any future medical expenses she may incur after her return to Germany, Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced during a brief check presentation at City Government Center. Donations from area citizens have already covered nearly $4,000 in medical expenses incurred by 29-year old Karoline Stallcup, with the remaining $3,500 in the fund earmarked for any future medical or cosmetic surgery expenses she may incur.

City To Offer Free Recycling Bins Through End Of September; New, Compact Bins Also Available For Apartment Dwellers
Harrisburg’s trash recycling program is being further enhanced with the free distribution of new recycling containers to any resident needing one, Mayor Stephen R. Reed announced today. Made possible by a grant from the state Department of Environmental Protection, the city will be distributing some of the new bins on a door-to-door basis in some neighborhoods, with other free units available for citizen pick-up at the City Government Center.

City Police Continue Search For Suspects In Separate Robbery Cases
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that Harrisburg City Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying four different suspects wanted in connection with five recent but separate city robbery cases. Police are looking for information about the two suspects and two possible accomplices who robbed and beat the owner of the Canal Jewelry Store on August 20, 2003, as well as the sole perpetrator of four separate city convenience store robberies that occurred on August 25 and 26. The Mayor said all of the suspects should be considered armed and dangerous and anyone with information about their identities should immediately contact the Harrisburg Bureau of Police at 717.255.3131. Cash rewards are being offered.

City Seeks Developer For City Island Restaurant
