City 2003 Holiday Parade Winners Announced
Harrisburg’s annual Holiday Parade drew more than 35,000 people today, kicking off the Thanksgiving-Hanukkah-Christmas-Kwanzaa season in the midstate. More than 3,000 marchers in nearly 100 parade units, including 17 bands, made it one of the largest Holiday Parades in the 18-year history of the event, Mayor Stephen R. Reed announced this afternoon.

Homicide Victim Identified
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that a body discovered in Uptown Harrisburg yesterday afternoon has been identified by the Dauphin County Coroner as 28-year old Victoria Bowman, whose last known address was possibly on Market Street in the city. Police found Bowman’s body wrapped in a sleeping bag yesterday afternoon along railroad tracks just north of the Maclay Street Bridge.

City Special Events Sponsorships Now Being Sought; Significant Marketing And Promotional Opportunities Offered
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the City of Harrisburg’s 2004 Corporate Event Sponsorship book is now available for review by local businesses interested in partnering with the city on its many annual special events and other recreational programming. The book lists the many different events annually produced by the city and the various sponsorship levels and opportunities being offered.

Market Street Bridge Restored To Early-1900’s Splendor; Dramatic New Antique-Style Streetlights, Underarch Lighting & Rehabbed Entrance Fixtures Produce Grand New Gateway To City
Harrisburg’s majestic Market Street Bridge has undergone a dramatic transformation into a grand new city gateway that reflects its early-Twentieth Century appearance, Mayor Stephen R. Reed noted today during dedication ceremonies for the 1926-era historic structure. Now completed is an extensive rehabilitation and beautification project that involved the restoration of the Bridge’s historic entrance fixtures and plazas, and the installation of dramatic new lighting both on and beneath the bridge.

Providing new toys and cold weather clothing for disadvantaged city youth are the goals of the City of Harrisburg’s annual holiday activities, Mayor Stephen R. Reed announced today in launching the city’s annual new toy and cold weather clothing collection drives. The new or like-new condition items may be dropped off at the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation offices in the Rev. Dr. M.L. King City Government Center, or at the Reservoir Park Mansion offices.

Eighth Annual Citizens Police Academy Class Graduates
Mayor Stephen R. Reed has lauded the efforts and commitment of fourteen city residents who are graduating this week from the city’s Tenth Annual Citizens Police Academy. The unique program was created by the Mayor in the early 1990’s and was the first of its kind in the midstate when initially established. Many other midstate communities now host similar programs.

S. Harrisburg Students To Receive Free Asthma Screening, Treatment And Prevention Education
City school students and their families will benefit from an innovative new public health effort targeting the respiratory illness of Asthma, Mayor Stephen R. Reed and Hamilton Health Center Chief Executive Officer Jeannine Peterson today announced during the unveiling of the new “Stay Active with Asthma” project set to begin this month in South Harrisburg. The new Asthma screening, treatment and public education program will identify children that may have the illness, provide treatment for those that do, and provide their families with effective prevention strategies and education.
