“America’s Huey” To Stop In City On March 1; Noon Welcoming Program Set For Commonwealth Avenue Behind Capitol Building

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that “America’s Huey-091”, the restored Vietnam helicopter on nationwide tour before its enshrinement in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., will arrive in Harrisburg on Monday, March 1st, with a special Noon welcoming ceremony on Commonwealth Avenue behind the State Capitol Building. The observances will include live musical performances, remarks by state and local officials and military leaders, and a special flyover by three Huey helicopters from the PA Army National Guard.

Pennsylvania Place Reopens

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported that residents on the sixth through twenty-fifth floors of Pennsylvania Place at 301 Chestnut Street have been permitted to return to their apartments following the completion of safety inspections by city Codes Enforcement officers. Clean up efforts will continue around the clock on the building’s fifth floor, the last remaining residential floor, delaying the return of residents on that floor until tomorrow.

Pennsylvania Place Update

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported that clean-up operations are continuing around the clock at Pennsylvania Place following a major three-alarm fire at the prestigious downtown office tower on Monday night. Tenants in floors 5 through 25 are expected to be able to reoccupy their residential units by sometime tomorrow afternoon barring any unforeseen developments, and the temporary shelter set up to house displaced tenants was officially closed today by Red Cross officials.

Planning For National Museum Of African American History Moves Into Higher Gear; Design Proposals Now Being Sought

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that planning for the proposed National Museum of African American History (NMAAH) continues to move ahead with the release of a formal request for qualifications for the design and construction management of the planned national-class historical facility. Now being sought are qualified proposals from companies interested in doing architectural design, exhibit design, construction management and engineering work.

Ms. Giambalvo assumes responsibility for conducting the city’s extensive special events sponsorship and marketing activities for such major events as the American Musicfest, Kipona, Holiday Parade, New Year’s Eve and more.

City Island Entrance Areas From Market Street Bridge To Undergo Dramatic Improvements

The entrance areas to Harrisburg City Island from the Market Street Bridge are set to undergo a dramatic transformation that will ease traffic congestion, provide greater safety and convenience to pedestrians and motorists, and be more appealing to visitors, Mayor Stephen R. Reed revealed today in announcing the new Market Street/City Island Underpass Reconstruction Project. Work will get underway by late Summer of this year and run through the Spring of 2005.
