MAYOR UNVEILS AND DEDICATES DR. CLAUDE E. NICHOLS STREET IN CITY
Harrisburg, PA Mayor Stephen R. Reed and officials from the Goodwill Keystone Area Foundation today unveiled and dedicated a street sign honoring the late Dr. Claude E. Nichols, Jr. The new street, Dr. Claude E. Nichols Street, is located contiguous to Goodwill Industries at 1150 Goodwill Drive in Harrisburg.
Reed said Dr. Claude E. Nichols provided over two decades of service to Goodwill through his positions as a volunteer Board Member, Committee Chair and Board Chair. Throughout his years of service, Dr. Nichols worked to expand and improve services to persons with disabilities and special needs.
"Dr. Nichols left a legacy at Goodwill that will never be forgotten," said Reed. "We are privileged to today dedicate this street in his honor so that all who use this roadway will remember his tireless and selfless service to this organization and this community."
Dr. Nichols, a practicing medical doctor in Harrisburg for over five decades, was also a pioneer in creating alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs and facilities for addicted persons to restore their lives.
He served on a variety of different boards and commissions, including the Citys Civil Service Board, which he chaired, and to which Mayor Reed had appointed him.
The Mayor also said that the Dr. Claude E. Nichols, Jr. Memorial Endowment Fund has been created in Dr. Nichols honor and that efforts are currently underway to increase the contributions and pledges to the Endowment Fund. He said the Endowment Fund was created to provide resources for employment and training services to individuals with barriers to employment and who are served by Goodwill Keystone Area. The Mayor said contributions and pledges have already reached over $11,000.00 and he encouraged anyone with the means to donate to do so.
The Goodwill Keystone Area Foundation was founded in 2004 after a merger of the local Goodwill organizations in Harrisburg, Lancaster, Reading and the surrounding 22 counties. The Foundation is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization that supports innovative services for individuals with disabilities and other barriers to independence by helping them to reach their full potential as workers and members of the broader community. Goodwill Keystone Area Foundation seeks financial support for its mission through annual gifts, planned giving and bequests.
