Harrisburg Joins 2010 Census Effort
to Promote Employment Opportunities
Harrisburg, PA Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported the City of Harrisburg is partnering with the U.S. Census Bureau to promote employment opportunities with the 2010 Census.
The Census Bureau is hiring six managers immediately to help open the Harrisburg Early Local Census Office (ELCO) this October. Five to six hundred employees will operate from the Harrisburg ELCO and later recruitment efforts will be conducted to fill these positions after managers are hired and trained. Additionally, the City of Harrisburg is supporting the efforts of the Complete Count Committee to ensure the citys population is properly represented in the decennial census.
The Mayor said the office will be located on 2600 North Second Street. Additional Local Census Offices (LCOs) will be established in the region in 2009. The Harrisburg ELCO is one of 150 local census offices opening throughout the country.
Reed said the project managers direct staff and resources, develop relationships with community leaders and local government officials, recruit employees, ensure the quality of gathered data, and monitor hardware, software, and telecommunication technology. Available positions are:
- Local Census Office Manager ($25.25/hour)
- Assistant Manager for Administration ($17.50/hour)
- Assistant Manager for Field Operations ($20.75/hour)
- Assistant Manager for Quality Assurance ($17.50/hour)
- Assistant Manager for Recruiting ($17.50/hour)
- Assistant Manager for Technology ($17.50/hour)
These full-time positions are temporary, lasting until late summer 2010, but offer competitive rates. The U.S. Census Bureau is testing applicants in July and selecting managers in August. Interested applicants should call (877) 348-9277, or visit the Philadelphia Regional Census Center online at www.census.gov/rophi/www/emply.html.
The U.S. Constitution requires a population and housing census every 10 years. The effort employs some of the most sophisticated technical and operational knowledge and tools available, as well as a work force of more than a half million temporary employees to count every man, woman and child. Census results are the basis for congressional representation as well as the distribution of federal, state and local funds totaling more than $300 billion annually. Census Day is April 1, 2010.
