MAYOR AGAIN CAUTIONS RESIDENTS OF POSSIBLE DOOR-TO-DOOR SALES SCAM, INDICATES SEVERAL LEGITIMATE DOOR-TO-DOOR SALES BUSINESSES DO EXIST

Harrisburg, PA – Mayor Stephen R. Reed again cautioned residents today of a potential sales scam throughout the City where an unknown man reportedly has been walking door-to-door with no company information asking residents to purchase an alarm or security system, but also indicated that there are at least three such sales teams that are legitimately selling their products within the City.

Reed said the Harrisburg Police Bureau has received several complaints in recent days of a white mail going door-to-door offering to install a home security system at no charge in exchange for being allowed to put an advertising sign in the yard. The individual was reportedly acting suspicious and had no brochures or other information with which to provide the homeowners with whom he spoke.

The Mayor did, however, indicate that at least three similarly-described but legitimate companies – G.E. Platinum, APX Alarm, and AMP – do in fact have representatives going door-to-door selling alarm systems. Each of these individuals should be wearing their company’s badge and should have other appropriate identification.

Reed urged residents to use caution and common sense if approached by a similar individual and to verify the legitimacy of the services being offered prior to conducting any such business transaction.

The Mayor said that anyone attempting to sell a product or offer a service for a price must obtain a city business license. He urged anyone who is approached by a door-to-door sales person that cannot provide the appropriate company identification to call Harrisburg Police at 255-3131.
