MAYOR ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL GUN AND DRUG ARRESTS

Harrisburg, PA – Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced a series of gun- and drug-related arrests made by Harrisburg Police over the past week which included the seizure of three additional guns and the arrest of five persons.

Reed said Xavier King, 18, of the 100 block of N. Summit Street, and a 16-year-old juvenile city resident, were both arrested on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, in connection with a traffic stop that occurred around 6:45 p.m. that date.

Reed said officers were questioning the driver and passenger of a vehicle for playing loud music when one of the officers spotted the passenger of the car concealing a weapon beneath the seat of the vehicle. As police took the passenger into custody, the driver fled the vehicle but was captured after a brief food pursuit. Drugs and drug paraphernalia were also found in the vehicle and in the possession of both suspects. A handgun was confiscated from the vehicle.

Reed said King was charged with carrying a firearm without a license and multiple drug violations and was remanded to Dauphin County Prison. The juvenile was charged with driving without a license, escape, and multiple drug violations. He was remanded to Schaffner Detention Center.

Reed also said police arrested Gale Green, 19, of the 1800 block of State Street, in connection with a traffic stop that occurred on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, around 9:19 p.m. in the 2500 block of Lexington Street.

Reed said officers initiated a traffic stop in the area and when the vehicle in question stopped in the 2500 block of Lexington Street, the driver attempted to flee the vehicle. The driver, Green, was detained by police and a search was conducted. The search yielded a handgun and a small amount of crack cocaine. Green was subsequently arrested and charged with carrying a firearm without a license, former convict not to possess a firearm, and was also charged with multiple drug and traffic violations. He was committed to Dauphin County Prison in lieu of posting bail.

Reed also said a search warrant was conducted on Thursday, September 4, 2008, around 2:30 p.m. at a business on the 1500 block of Walnut Street. The search yielded a large amount of crack cocaine as well as a large amount of cash, both of which were seized by police.

Reed said a search warrant was conducted on Thursday, September 4, 2008, at a residence in the 400 block of S. 14th Street. The search yielded a large amount of PCP as well as a firearm, each of which were seized by police. Two individuals were charged in connection with the seizure.

Reed said John D. Smith, Jr., 64, of the 1800 block of Bellevue Road, was arrested in connection with an incident that occurred on Monday, September 1, 2008, whereby a home in the 1100 block of Derry Street was reportedly set on fire. An investigation indicated that Smith was seen leaving the structure at the time the fire was discovered.
