ALL CITY PHONE LINES, INCLUDING EMERGENCY DISPATCH CENTER, TO BE DOWN FROM 3:45 AM TO 4:30 AM ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2008

Harrisburg, PA – Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said that all incoming and outgoing city phone lines, including non-emergency lines at the city’s emergency dispatch center, will be inactive from 3:45 a.m. until 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 30, 2008. The city’s 911 system will be unaffected and will remain operational.

Reed said Verizon was awarded a contract to provide local and long distance phone service for the City of Harrisburg beginning early next year, and thus must install and activate a piece of equipment in preparation for next year’s switch over to the new service. The installation is not expected to last more than 15 minutes, at which time all city phone lines will again be fully activated.

Reed said the early morning timeframe was chosen because the city dispatch center receives the fewest calls during that time.
