‘OLDE UPTOWN’ RESIDENTIAL PROJECT ADDS OVER 100 NEW AND RENOVATED HOMES TO THE CITY

POSTAL WORKERS TO COLLECT DONATED FOODSTUFFS DOOR-TO-DOOR ON SATURDAY, MAY 10, 2008
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today joined members of the Harrisburg Branch 500 of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the U.S. Postal Service in kicking off the 2008 National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive, which encourages the donation of non-perishable foodstuffs to the South Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and other regional food banks. The Harrisburg Area Drive is being conducted on Saturday, May 10, 2008, in association with the U.S. Postal Service, the United Way of the Capital Region, the AFL-CIO and America’s Second Harvest.

MAYOR HONORS HARRISBURG SCHOOL DISTRICT STAFF DURING NATIONAL TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK

Reed and officials from the Harrisburg School District today presented 14 District teachers with "Teacher of the Year" certificates of recognition for their outstanding service at a luncheon held at the Goodwin Family Life Center at 2430 N. Third Street in the Uptown to celebrate National Teacher Appreciation Week.

MAYOR STEPHEN REED RECEIVES AWARD FROM THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS OF PENNSYLVANIA (AIA Pennsylvania)
In a ceremony held today, the American Institute of Architects of Pennsylvania (AIA Pennsylvania) presented Mayor Stephen Reed with its top state award for Contribution to the Profession by a Government Official. The award is given by the AIA Pennsylvania Board of Directors in recognition of significant contributions to, or in particular support of, the role of the architectural profession and/or the built environment. State or local government officials are eligible for the award.

HARRISBURG BUREAU OF POLICE SEEKS RE-ACCREDITATION
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said that a team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), will arrive on April 26, 2008 to determine how well the Harrisburg Bureau of Police continues to meet national law enforcement standards. Part of the process involves a public hearing, where members of the community are invited to offer comments on the Bureau’s ability to comply with the CALEA Standards.

WORK BEGINS ON MIDTOWN ARTS CENTER AT FORMER ‘PAL BUILDING’
Mayor Stephen R. Reed and developer Bartlett, Traynor and London, LLC, today announced that work has begun on the conversion of the former PAL (Police Athletic League) Building located at 1110 North 3rd Street to be the new Midtown Arts Center.

CITY EARNS DESIGNATION AS ‘KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL’ AFFILIATE
Mayor Stephen R. Reed was today presented with an official certification designating the City of Harrisburg as an affiliate of the national Keep America Beautiful (KAB) organization. In earning the designation, deemed locally as the ‘Keep Harrisburg Beautiful’ campaign, the City of Harrisburg joins 1,000 other affiliates nationwide to receive such certification this year.

GROUND BROKEN ON ‘ZERO ENERGY’ HOME IN SOUTH ALLISON HILL
Mayor Stephen R. Reed, Tri-County HDC, Ltd. and a host of local officials today broke ground on an innovative ‘zero energy’ home to be built at 340 S. 16th Street in the City’s South Allison Hill neighborhood. The ‘zero energy’ home is a model home that will be built in the Mount Pleasant Homes development as part of a 25-home, $5 million housing development project in the neighborhood. The remaining traditional homes, each of which will have more conventional energy efficiency features, will be built in the 1400 and 1500 blocks of Swatara Street and the 300 block of South 16th Street.Read more

‘THE SPOT’ TO REOPEN IN COMMERCE BANK PARK ON CITY ISLAND
Mayor Stephen R. Reed, the Harrisburg Senators baseball club, and Billy Kaldes – owner of The SPOT restaurant formerly located at the corner of N. 2nd and Walnut Streets – today announced plans to open ‘The SPOT at the Park’, a hot dog stand in Commerce Bank Park on Harrisburg’s City Island which will serve fans attending home games of the Harrisburg Senators.
